Almost three-quarters of the Swiss population live in greater urban areas.
Greater urban areas or conurbations are geographically connected areas that are made up of a number of municipalities. In Switzerland, these areas are defined by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (BFS). On the basis of the Confederation Census of 2000, there are 50 conurbations in Switzerland. Each conurbation has a core zone (core municipality or core city).
The rest of the population, described as the urban population by the BFS, lives in 5 isolated cities, each with more than 10,000 inhabitants.
